We have previously looked at the IMG and Vietnam War and have also been quietly adding VSC materials to our archives.

Here we present an example of the bulletin of the rival, Maoist, Britain Vietnam Solidarity Front

BVSF Bulletin October 1968

and a leaflet attacking the “Trotskyite-Revisionist VSC Clique”

A more measured flyer simply sets out the BVSF’s general position on Vietnam solidarity.

A discussion document within the VSC, authored by Geoff and Marie Richman disucsses how to respond to, and learn from BVSF provocations…

Lastly we have a snappy flyer from “Leeds Direct Action”. It is not clear if this group is related to the Syndicalist Workers Federation which published the “Direct Action” paper at this time.

The Leeds leaflet was handed out on the March 17th VSC demonstration and had some effect as I recall police numbers being shouted out in Trafalgar Square when police tried to make arrests.

More generally there was a policy of ‘No arrests’ on Vietnam demonstrations which meant not merely that people should march with arms linked but also that they should intervene to prevent the police grabbing marchers or, failing that, to rescue them.

The Richmans were prominent in Camden VSC and antagonistic to groups such as the IMG for their strategy for VSC of simply repeating marches and keeping it as a single issue campaign. Their politics are outlined in detail in Celia Hughes’ PhD thesis on left wing subjectivities available from the Warwick University website.

    And where are they now?

If you mean the Richmans, the thesis states that they both died ca 2005.
